James Armor House, 1805 Toll House in Greenville, Delaware

This was originally an 1805 toll house. The style of the house has changed with two additions; an Italianate addition in the 1850's and a Colonial Revival addition in the 1930's. Even with the additions, it appears that many of the original details remain. You can read more about the transformations of this house by clicking the link below for the Delaware Online article.

LISTING DETAILS

The James Armor House is on the National Register of Historic Places and consists of 3 sections: early 19th C, Mid-19th C, and early 20th C. The stone construction creates deep window sills which give the home that authentic charm. There is much original millwork and hardware and two original fireplaces, one with a formal punchwork mantel and side cupboards.

The home is now entered through an enclosed garden room with the original Dutch doors to the earliest part of the house. This room has original built-ins and a fireplace with wood burning insert. Once facing Lancaster Pike, the 1850's original door is no longer used as a main entrance and a former porch to the north is now a pleasant sunroom. A butler's pantry adds more cupboards and a sink which sits over the original well in the basement which could still be hooked up for outdoor water use. An updated kitchen with granite counters and porcelain tile backsplash leads to a cozy breakfast room.

The 2nd floor has 4 bedrooms, original light fixtures found in the house, deep window sills, a whole-house fan, and 2 full baths. A walk-in closet has pull-down stairs to an attic with lots of storage space. The 3rd floor has 2 more bedrooms and another full bath with claw foot tub.

The detached carriage house has plenty of room for 2 cars, a studio or exercise area, and stairs leading up to a full attic. The 2.42 acre private lot with winding driveway is hidden by trees from the 2 streets which border the house, and there is possible subdivision of 2 or more lots along Courtney Rd. Yard has sprinkler system, basement has 3 sump pumps. Weil McLane steam boiler is low pressure system with a separate oil burner for hot water and there are 2 250 gallon oil tanks in basement.
