Built during the war of 1812, the John Jay Van Valkenburgh house is an
Adams inspired Federal house that has been meticulously restored with
modern conveniences sensitively incorporated. Four original fireplaces,
wide board pine floors and period moldings are a few of the many
original details still intact. The scale is grand with a 10 foot wide
central hall, formal parlors, palladian window, a 25 x 13 foot gathering
room on the second floor, three season porch and a beautiful country
kitchen with quartz counters and stainless steel appliances. Central
air, generator and security system. Park like setting with a barn/studio
offering fabulous space for a home office, hobbies, arts, yoga etc.
Five minutes to Main Street Chatham, 25 minutes to Hudson or Albany.

This is a before and after post because there was a light renovation done between listings. To see the current photos only, please use the links below to look at your favorite realty site. With the renovation, it appears carpets were removed and some painting was done. The biggest disappointment in the renovation is the removal of the lamp on the staircase. I wonder where that went. Another curious detail;in the previous listing, the bedrooms were numbered at 7, but the current listing has only 4, so I'm not sure if there was an error in the previous listing or if the renovation changed the number of bedrooms. Based on a brief Internet search, this house appears to have been run as a bed and breakfast at one time, though no websites or information could be found beyond the name, Marshall House Bed and Breakfast. It was also more recently run as a Victorian Tea Room.
