The Big House, 1738 English Manor in Palisades, New York

This house is being called an "English Manor" by the listing agent, but other sources call it a colonial and a "stone house in the Dutch vernacular". There is also an extensive history to this house in addition to what is mentioned below. You can view documents at the Library of Congress link below.

LISTING DETAILS

"The Big House", located in Snedens Landing, is one of the oldest homes in the country and on the National Register of Historic Homes. Twenty five minutes to NYC, this beautifully restored and historically significant circa 1738 English Manor House has unusually tall ceilings for its age. George Washington met General Lafayette at the property during the Revolutionary War and Martha Washington separately visited en route to meet her husband. Snedens Landing had much historical significance during the war.

Significant period details include massive ceiling beams, important 18th century white pine paneling in living room, period cabinetry in dining room, and wide board floors. Kitchen wing possibly dates to 1685 and features old style fireplace and "garret" which was original a sleeping loft. Built of local field stone with 23" thick walls, this home is a national treasure and a trophy home for connoisseurs of early American history or anyone who loves unique style! The land was once owned by first mayor of New York, William Merritt. Extraordinary!
