WHAT I LOVE ABOUT THIS HOME (From the Homeowner)
This livable family home has flexed and morphed with us as our family has grown, shrunk and changed over the years. When we moved in a decade ago, with two teenage sons and a 6-year-old daughter, the third floor was perfect for the boys, keeping the smell of stinky socks well away from the rest of humanity. When they mercifully went off to college, we shut the doors to the third floor, and the rest of the house molded comfortably to our new, smaller needs. Friends and family gather in the warm, bustling kitchen when we entertain. And when my husband and I are alone on a cosy night in, we gather in front of the wood fire in the sitting room, snug as bugs in a rug with the TV. It is a beautiful home, but more importantly, it is alive, living and breathing with us, meeting our needs before we even know we have them.
PREVIOUS LISTING DETAILS
A beautifully maintained Victorian home set on one of Burlington, Vermont’s most beloved streets has hit the market for $1,995,000. The towering brick and stone-faced blue marble home spans nearly 6,200 square feet with 5 bedrooms and 6 bathrooms. It was designed by architect W.R.B. Wilcox in c.1899 for John W. McGeary, the largest shipper of tanbark to the leather industry in New England. Much of the original architectural detail has been preserved, including a breathtaking entry with cherry and oak grand staircase and landing with 19th century Tiffany windows. With 10 foot ceilings, nicely scaled rooms and period architectural detail, the first floor offers elegant formal spaces as well as the sun drenched kitchen that opens to a large patio and wonderful gardens. The master suite features a copper soaking tub, gas fireplace, curved turret bedroom and custom walk in dressing room. The 0.44 acre property includes a 720 square foot studio apartment perfect for in-laws and guests. The home was also used as the primary location in the 1983 film “The Gift of Love: A Christmas Story.”

There is a carriage house behind this house, which was once a rental for it as well. The sales listing for the carriage house says it's a "condominium subdivision". I don't know if that means it was sold separately and now simply shares the driveway or if it is somehow still connected to the property (though it is not connected to this listing), but I thought I would add the photos since I found them. You can see the carriage house out the front windows of the rental/guest suite on the left side of the photo below.
