Old Stone Meeting Hall, 1810 Stone Colonial Church in Barneveld, New York

LISTING DETAILS

The Old Stone Meeting Hall

Come home to this historical stone home in the village of Barneveld. Originally built as a Presbyterian Church, this stoic structure rises to meet you as you enter the Village of Barneveld. The two red doors (traditional for a church of this era -- one for the ladies and one for the gentlemen) invite you and your guest in. But first, let us take the driveway around back, the park-like .45 acre setting invites you to relax. Sit a spell on the deck, or if the sun is too much, step into the screened-in porch. It is hard to believe you are just one minute away from State Route 12, 15 minutes from the Nano Center and 17 minutes from Rome -- all while sitting in the foothills of the Adirondacks.

The current owners purchased the structure in 1970 and lovingly converted it to a single family home. In essence they built a home within this beautiful stone structure. A great deal of attention was paid to preserving as much of the original character as possible. The original plank floors, pocket doors, stained glass door panels and so much more was preserved. Many updates were completed with era-sensitive materials: the front walk is stone from the original John Street Bridge in Utica.

The first floor was converted to a large, bright eat-in kitchen, a formal dining room, family room/library with propane stove, entry hall, office, half bath and living room. The second floor was converted as well, but not before the floor over the living room was removed. This created a breathtaking living room with a 19-foot ceiling and a second floor wrap-around balcony with an open area large enough for a game room. Five bedrooms and two full baths were then added.

For efficiency, blown-in insulation has been pumped into the walls and over two feet of insulation has been added to the attic. Windows have been updated, as well as the utilities, and 3 years ago a high- efficiency boiler was installed.

The updates are stunning, and only exceeded by the care taken in preserving the charm of this historic building.
