You may not recognize it from this first picture, but this is the house that was used for exterior shots of the Bed and Breakfast where Bill Murray stayed in Groundhog Day. At the time the movie was filmed, the house was a private residence, not a bed and breakfast. When the house sold in 2008, the new owners had a dream to turn the house into a bed and breakfast, just like in the movie.
Anyone hoping to see the room Bill Murray stayed in will be very disappointed. The interiors of the bed and breakfast were all done on a sound stage and the interior of the house does not resemble the set at all, but it is a beautiful restoration and it is well dressed. You can, however, walk through the get and up the sidewalk to the porch that appeared in the film and you can look out from the window used by the crew for the street shot when Bill Murray checked every morning after Sonny and Cher woke him up.
According to the bed and breakfast website, as well as other Woodstock websites, the town holds festivities every year the week of Groundhog Day and there are plaques all over the town that depict places that were used in the film, among them, the spot where Bill Murray stepped in the puddle each day, the Tip Top Cafe, now a taqueria, where Bill Murray and Andie McDowell ate a lot of pastries and the Opera House which was used as the "fleabag" hotel Andie McDowell and Chris Elliot stayed, as well as the place Phil jumps from in the suicide montage. Below the listing and listing photos are some more pictures from Woodstock, Illinois.
