Hidden Valley Castle, 1921 Castle in Cornwall, Connecticut

LISTING DETAILS

Enchanting, petite castle nestled beside a tumbling trout brook with ponds and waterfalls on 200 acres. Unlike the castles of yore, this snug, comfortable country home is ideal for a family or a romantic retreat from city stress. As well as the elegant main house there is a guest house with a "secret garden" and a heated pool, a gate house with 4 bedrooms, a spacious 3 stall stable, a chauffeur's 2 bedroom apartment and a 6 car heated garage.

A Brief History from "Curbed"

In 1921, long before western Connecticut became an established summer destination for New York's society set, the well-bred socialite and philanthropist Charlotte Bronson Hunnewell Martin and her surgeon husband, Dr. Walton Martin, began construction on this fairytale castle on their secluded country estate. Four years later, construction on Hidden Valley Castle was complete, with seven bedrooms and ten bathrooms spread over 8,400 square feet. The Martins were chauffeured to this sleepy farming village from Manhattan, where Charlotte busied herself with a bit of urban planning, establishing the Turtle Bay Gardens, a now-famous row of townhouses with a shared rear garden. The property has since been owned by a series of notables, including financier Saul Steinberg, former Macy's exec Joseph Cicio, hedge fund manager Buddy Fletcher. The castle, sited on 275 acres, includes 275 acres, a stone gatehouse, a guest house, a potting shed, a horse barn, a Sabrina-style chauffeur's garage with attic apartment, and a rare licensed helipad.
